THE HISTORY.

Born to Mary and John Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas, Sam Winchester appeared to be as average as any baby. His father was quick to start up a college fund for him, as he had done for his older brother, Dean, and Mary was already beginning to imagine the days in which Sam would grow old enough to ride a bicycle and rough around with the boys. The picture of a normal, healthy family, with dreams of a future laying far ahead of them was, without a doubt, what the Winchester family was. Perhaps it was the illusion of normality that made Mary forget that there was something unfortunate lurking quietly in the dark; waiting, watching, and planning to take what was his.

Azazel, a demon better known as Yellow Eyes, had a contract. One sealed by no other than Mary herself long before either of her children were born. Mary may have forgotten. Azazel, however, did not. During an unexpected and unforgettable evening, Azazel stealthily crept into the Winchester home and soon found himself standing over the crib of their second born. Slicing his wrist open, he fed the child his blood and contaminated baby Sammy’s veins with his impurity. It was on that very same night that Mary realized that something was amiss; it was on that very same night that she walked in on Azazel and ended up pinned to the ceiling and burned to death by the demon who had changed her son forever.

From that point on, the normal, happy little family no longer existed. John packed up as much as he could fit into his Chevy Impala and hauled his kids out onto the road, vowing to find the thing that had killed his wife or die trying. They moved from state to state, city to city, living out of the homes of old friends and motel rooms until both Sam and Dean were old enough to start going to school. Unlike most children, however, they were not sent off with warnings of "don't forget your lunch!" and "listen to the rules!", but deathly reminders that at every corner, something terrifying could very much be preparing to attack. Sam and Dean were nothing like other children. They were trained, they were drilled, they were raised like soldiers to fight against the supernatural forces that their fathers life had become so invested in.

During the earliest of his youth, Sam didn't think much about it. It was how things were supposed to be. That was the routine. Get up, some days without Dad around, listen to Dean, keep his nose clean, and wait for Dad to come home to deliver further instruction. Mostly, John taught Sam how to properly handle guns and physically takedown a person in a fight. It wasn't until he was a tiny bit older that he was pushed into remembering why it was important to burn corpses, how to properly set up a rock salt barrier, and the differences between a ghost and a ghoul. His teachers often questioned him in school when he put the things that he learned into practice through some of his work and, eventually, it carried on to the point where Sam began to slowly realize that something was severely wrong with the way that he, his father, and his brother lived.

They were not a normal family. Normal kids didn't live out of cars and motel rooms, they didn't change schools every couple months, their fathers didn't vanish for days at a time, they didn't study things about monsters, and they certainly weren't allowed to be anywhere near a firearm. They were stationed in one place. They were young. They were free. They were happy.

Suddenly, like a fire being sparked in the middle of a pile of hollowed logs, Sam Winchester began to desire a life that was far from his own.

From that point on, Sam became far more stubborn. He would question, he would disagree, he would ask why. Why were they hunting? Why did it matter if they found whatever killed their mother? Why was Dad always gone? Why could they not get a house and go to one school? The answers he got in turn were tiring and unsatisfactory. And so, in his own tiny and subtle way, Sam began to rebel. He was already known for his intelligence in school, but it wasn't until the need to make something more of himself shone out that Sam decided that he was going to further invest himself in his classwork and actually take pride in the grades that he received. In comparison to before, it was a drastic change. John noticed and, thinking that it was best, decidedly bought him an old computer to work on school and help out with research for his cases on. Sam willingly used the computer to help out, but that was only when he wasn't busy butting heads with the man. Their feelings on what was wrong and what was right repeatedly found themselves resting on opposing sides of the coin spinning between them, leaving them at constant odds with no other than poor Dean stuck in the middle to referee. Eventually, when Sam decided that he couldn't take it anymore - between the fights with his father and the pitiful way that they lived - he informed both John and Dean that he was leaving for college. It was the spark that ignited the most fatal explosion between the Winchester men and Sam, in his determination, desire, and need to defy his father, walked away from his family with John Winchester's memorable words of, "if you walk out that door, don't you ever come back" ringing in his ears.

Stanford University was both everything that he desired and hated all bundled in one fun package. The upside was that he was finally gone. No more Dad to boss him around, no more worries about drowning his way through a miserable life based on a hunt that had been leading to nowhere for as long as Sam could remember. He was free of the burden of being a Winchester and able to be ...well, anything that he wanted, really. Despite it all, the freedom that he had did not feel as wonderful as he knew that it should have. The grating knowledge that his brother and father were constantly out there in the thick of it and the awkward way he delved himself into the life of a 'normal' student complicated things.

At least, of course, until he met her.

Jessica Moore. Unlike his brother, it took a lot more for Sam to want to be involved with a woman. He desired intelligence, strength, and most importantly, someone who was willing to challenge him. Jessica fit the bill so easily that Sam had, for a while, thought that she had been created specifically for him and no one else. She made him think and she certainly made him believe that somehow, in spite of all that he repeatedly worried over based on his family, the possibility of a future that he wanted was existent. Jessica was his first love; nothing in life had ever felt more real to him than he time that he had spent with her. Plans of marriage and a life with her as a constant presence motivated him to apply for law school. It was during this time that Dean decided to pay him an unexpected visit in hopes of reuniting long enough to find their father who had, without surprise on Sam's part, gone missing. Handing Jessica the excuse that he had to go off and take care of some family business and the stern promise that he would soon be back, Sam departed with his brother and took on the dead-ended search that, irritatingly, nearly got him killed by an angry spirit. The hunt had served no purpose beyond further worrying the Winchester brothers over John's whereabouts and the unexpected retrieval of the mans personal journal, which he was rarely found without. Hardly motivated to continue on with a search that Sam believed would only end with John randomly showing up again, Sam headed back to Stanford in a timely fashion with both an interview at law school and the love of his life waiting for his return.

The reunion at home did not go well. Upon his return, Sam found Jessica Moore sprawled out on the ceiling of their bedroom. Her body, just as his own mother's had in his nursery when he was a child, was quickly consumed by flames, bringing her to her very death. Sam was dragged from the apartment by Dean; a fortunate thing, as Sam likely would have been burned to death as well in his desperate act to rescue the holder of his heart. It was during that night, in a manner similar to John Winchesters, that Sam decided that he, too, was going to take his revenge on whatever creature was responsible for the deaths of his girlfriend and mother. And so, with a new drive bursting within him, Sam turned his back on the dreams of building a life and family and buried himself back into bitter routine that it seemed there never had been any escape from.

The next few years of his life were, without a doubt, the longest that he had ever lived. The demon blood manifested within him began to retaliate, forcing Sam to have visions based upon the creature who had cursed him and, surprisingly, other children who carried demon blood on the inside like him. The search for both their father and the thing that they were chasing after went dead-ended for a long while, but eventually all three of the Winchester men united and began to plot against the creature - a demon - that had killed Mary Winchester and Jessica Moore. A confrontation between themselves and Azazel left them all waking up in the hospital, where Dean's life was terrifyingly dangling precariously on a single string. With only his children left to lose, John struck a deal with Azazel, trading his life for Dean's own. Before his death, he cryptically warned Dean that he needed to either save Sam or kill him.

In the months that followed, Sam and Dean struggled to carry on without their father in hopes of finishing what he had started. In that time, Sam was possessed by a demon with close ties to Azazel, experimented on with a discovered immunity when a demonic virus plagued a town, and eventually, at one point, kidnapped by Azazel himself to compete in an abandoned town against the other psychic kids in a battle to the death. The entire situation seemed barbaric and foolish to Sam, who immediately tried to get everyone to unite together so that they could work on an escape. Unfortunately, one of their numbers had turned against them and stealthily worked at killing them off one by one until, finally, they discovered that it was indeed Ava responsible for the attacks. Jake, someone that Sam had confided in about his doubts based on them getting out of this all right, chose to snap her neck when she came after Sam. As appreciative of the rescue Sam was, he didn't even think twice about working with Jake, the only other survivor, to escape.

That had been a mistake. Jake ended up stabbing Sam in the back, thus severing his spinal cord and ending his life.

His story would have ended there if not for Dean. In his grief, Dean immediately sped out to a crossroads and made a deal with a demon. His entire life, save for the one year he had left to live, in exchange for Sam's return from the dead. Sealing the deal with a kiss, Sam was yanked from the world beyond this one and back into the land of the living. Together, he, Dean, Bobby, and Ellen moved off to take on Jake and Azazel; Sam, pulling what was no doubtedly 'overkill' and, at the same time, taking his very first human life after destroying Jake, while Dean unloaded one of the Colt's bullets into Azazel's chest, finally killing off the demon that had haunted them all their lives. The battle was over, but the war was not. Before they had managed to lay hands on either of their enemies, Sam and Dean had to watch helplessly as Jake opened the doorway to Hell and released enough demons to easily be the size of an army into the world. With a war ahead of them, Sam vowed to find a way to save his brother from Hell before his one year ran out.

The next year was filled with Sam making several desperate and morally questionable attempts at saving Dean's life. Sam even went so far as to allow a demon named Ruby, who claimed to only want to assist him, into his life because she suggested that she knew how to save his brother. Whether she did or not, the fact of the matter was that breaking a contract with a demon was, in short, next to impossible. The closest that Sam managed to get at it was after he discovered that there was a demon lurking on the surface named Lilith - the demon that held his brothers contract and, for some reason, wanted nothing more than to see his own head on a plate. Sam and Dean set after her when the timeclock was running at it's shortest with a surprise joint effort coming in from Ruby's end at the last minute. The three of them did everything possible to try and take Lilith on but, in the end, Lilith managed to get the jump on them by stealing Ruby's body from her and trapping them in a room while the hellhounds were barking at their door. They tore into the room at her command, ripped Dean apart before a horrified Sam, and Lilith in turn tried to kill him off as well. When her attempt failed due to an immunity to her powers, Lilith fled, leaving Sam to mourn over his brothers lifeless body.

What Sam does remember of the months after were less than pleasant. Constantly, he would drown away his sorrows in alcohol. It was a rare thing indeed when one saw Sam. And when they did? He was far from sober. Sam spent his days trying to find a way to bring his brother back. He even went so far as to attempt a deal with a crossroads demon who merely mocked him and told him that the pieces were all in place. Sam was alive. Dean was dead. At the time, Sam was far too drunk to try to understand what that meant. All he did was retaliate in his rage, stabbing the demon through with the demon killing knife on his person. Cold, bitter, and alone, Sam retreated back to his motel room only to find a band of demons hiding away in his room waiting for his return. One of those demons, to his unpleasant surprise, was Ruby. She turned against those that she had arrived with, claiming that she had been forced to join them and would likely be chased after by her own kind for what she had done. It wasn't until after she took over an empty body that Ruby managed to seduce Sam into sleeping with her and, from that point on, the feelings of wariness that he held for her began to fade. Ruby convinced Sam that there was no way to bring Dean back. However, taking his revenge out on Lilith? It was a definite possibility. Only then, after being thoroughly convinced that it truly was the only thing that he could do for his brother, Sam agreed to begin to practice using the abilities that he had been granted by Azazel. Under Ruby's instruction, Sam slowly began to become more and more gifted with his powers. Eventually, the conclusion that consuming demon blood to enhance his abilities was met. Even though the concept was more than distasteful, Sam pushed himself at it in his desperation.

Consumed with his obsession based on finding Lilith, Sam found himself relying on Ruby almost as much as he did his own brother. It wasn't until Dean returned from the grave, delivered by the angels themselves, that Sam pulled away from the demon and began to focus on his family again. At first, he lied to Dean. He snuck out, he met up with Ruby, and he didn't mention a word about using his abilities to his big brother. Eventually, Dean followed him out and discovered the truth behind both his cooperation with Ruby and his powers. Far from pleased, Dean angrily tried to convince Sam that what he was doing was wrong. For a while, Sam believed him. That was, of course, until the angels proved to be far from what he imagined. Sam was quick to start up on his powers again as soon as they had to face off Samhain and hardly hesitated to stop ever since.

It was learned that Lilith's agenda was far bigger than anyone could have ever imagined. Her aim was to release Lucifer from Hell and, in order to do that, she had to break sixty-six Seals. Those Seals were spread out all over and were quickly shattering, bringing the demon closer and closer to unlocking the cage that Lucifer was tucked away in and starting the very Apocalypse that all of humanity had predicted and feared for years. With that knowledge in mind, Sam's motivation based upon killing her doubled. He went to desperate lengths and began to take more and more of the blood that Ruby offered him, eventually becoming so addicted to it that he couldn't go more than a few hours at a time without taking a drink. It eventually got to the point where Dean discovered his secret when he broke down and began lapping up the blood of a demon he had been fighting. That, to Sam's dismay, resulted in him being locked down in Bobby's panic room for a high-level demon blood detox that involved massive hallucinations and the suspicion of him dying before the blood fled from his system entirely.

The question as to whether or not he would ever survive a detox of that intensity was never answered. Castiel, sent by the angels, mysteriously opened the door to the panic room without anyone's knowledge and left Sam to make his quick escape back to Ruby's side. Dean was quick to follow and, during that time, what was barely lingering of their relationship shattered into pieces. The first swing would have never happened if not for the fact that Dean dubbed him as the one thing he feared the most - a monster - and the aftermath left Sam fleeing from the scene, his drive, anger, and guilt all pushing him as far away from his brother as possible. If not for the extreme obsession for revenge and the overwhelming addiction to Ruby's blood that weighed on him, it was very likely that he would have at least considered that Dean, no matter how furious he made him, had been entirely right all along.

After being convinced that Ruby's blood was not enough to make him powerful to the point where he'd be able to destroy Lilith, Sam uneasily agreed to drink blood from another possessed host instead. The demon within the host knew what was to come, but hardly agreed to let Sam get away with the task so easily. Forcing itself to reside dormant in the woman that it was possessing, Sam had no other choice but to feed off of the woman as she screamed and begged for her life. Her death was quickly forgotten when Sam realized that he was more than fully prepared to take Lilith on.

With Ruby, Sam tracked Lilith down and killed her. Only then, with Lilith's blood trickling into an unusual arc on the floor, did Ruby admit that it had been part of the plan all along. Lilith had been the final Seal and Sam, from the very moment in which Mary had made that deal with Azazel so many years before, had been chosen to be the one to do it. Horrified by the betrayal presented before him by someone that he had brought himself to fully trust and even feel for, Sam staggered back, Ruby's promises of him being rewarded falling upon deaf ears. Dean burst into the scene soon after and, with a new resolve, Sam grabbed Ruby by the arms and held her in place as Dean stabbed her with her own knife. With Ruby out of the scene, both Sam and Dean stood next to one another as a white light began to form before them, bringing forth the rise of Lucifer himself.

THE DETAILS.

INTERESTS: Dean, reading, anything supernatural related, his laptop, bands that make his brother cringe.
GREATEST FEARS: Losing Dean.
GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT:
BIGGEST FAILURE/SELF DISAPPOINTMENT: Without a doubt, Sam's biggest failure is having gotten tangled in the web of manipulation that Ruby weaved for him, thus resulting in him murdering an innocent woman, betraying his brother, and ultimately breaking the final Seal and freeing Lucifer from hell.
FLAWS: For a person so incredibly intelligent, Sam can also be terribly stupid at the same time. He is far from a perfect person; Sam has made more than enough mistakes in the past, all ranging from reasoning that goes from mistakes in judgment to selfish desires. [in progress]
SPECIAL/UNIQUE TALENTS: (All found at his wiki.) Sam is a skilled fighter, proficient with firearms, shotguns, and melee weapons. Like his brother Dean, Sam possesses many abilities that are frowned upon by law, including, but not limited to: lock picking, computer hacking, disguised conning, and car jacking. Sam commands vast knowledge of the supernatural and is considered an "encyclopedia of weirdness". He is proficient in reading and recalling spells written in Latin, which can be used to exorcise, summon or vanquish demons. He has a great sense of direction and time, being able to find a vampire's nest while blindfolded by keeping track of the time and the turns of the car. His psychic abilities include: telekinesis, precognition, immunity to demonic powers, exorcism, killing demons. He is also able to grip demons with his powers, causing them pain which can be used as a method of torture.
